Mastering Your Greatest Craft: Why critical thinking may be one of the most important safeguarding skills of this generation

There is a question I've found myself coming back to over the past year, and the more I ask it, the harder it is to ignore. What if the greatest safeguarding challenge facing children today isn't what they're seeing online, but how they're learning to think while they're there?

It's not a question that comes from fear of technology, quite the opposite. Technology has opened extraordinary opportunities for learning, creativity and connection. Most of us wouldn't choose to go backwards. But somewhere in the middle of all the conversations about screen time, online safety and artificial intelligence, I think we've overlooked something much more fundamental.
We've become so focused on what children are consuming that we've stopped asking what their digital environments are quietly teaching them. For generations, childhood was shaped largely by people. Parents, teachers, grandparents, coaches and communities all played a part in helping young people understand the world around them. That didn't mean every child had the same experience, but there was something relatively consistent about where influence came from. Today, influence works differently. It is increasingly personalised, responsive and immediate. Children are growing up in environments that don't simply present information; they learn from behaviour and respond to it. Every pause, every click and every search helps determine what comes next. That isn't inherently good or bad. It is simply the reality of the digital environments many children now inhabit.
What interests me is not the technology itself, but what happens over time when these environments become part of everyday childhood. If a child's attention is constantly being guided towards what is most engaging, most familiar or most likely to keep them scrolling, what effect does that have on the development of curiosity? What happens to the habit of asking difficult questions? Do children become better at exploring ideas, or better at following the next recommendation? These are not easy questions to answer, but they are questions worth asking.
This is why I believe we need to start talking about cognitive safeguarding.
When most people hear the word safeguarding, they think about protecting children from immediate harm. Of course that remains essential. But I wonder whether safeguarding in the twenty-first century also needs to include protecting the conditions that allow independent thinking to develop. Because if we only focus on protecting children from harmful content, we may miss the equally important task of helping them understand how influence works in the first place. Critical thinking has often been treated as an academic skill, something that belongs in classrooms or examinations. I think that definition is now too narrow. In a world where algorithms increasingly decide what captures our attention, critical thinking becomes something much more practical. It is the ability to pause before accepting an idea simply because it appears frequently. It is recognising that what is presented to us is not always the whole picture. It is asking who benefits, what might be missing, and whether another perspective exists. These are not simply educational skills anymore; they are life skills.
This matters because creativity has always depended on more than imagination. We often celebrate the finished painting, the successful business, the breakthrough invention or the beautiful piece of music, but every meaningful act of creativity begins much earlier. It begins with someone noticing something differently. Asking a question nobody else has asked. Challenging an assumption that everyone else has accepted. In other words, creativity grows out of independent thinking.
Perhaps that is why the phrase Master Your Craft has come to mean something different to me over time. At first glance, people naturally associate craft with making something using your hands. There is beauty in that interpretation, but I believe craft is much broader. A teacher masters their craft. A scientist masters theirs. An entrepreneur, an artist, a social worker and a parent all have crafts to master. Before any of them develop expertise, they develop habits of thinking. They learn how to solve problems, evaluate evidence, remain curious and adapt when new information challenges what they thought they knew. The craft comes second.
The thinking comes first.
That is why I find myself asking another question.
How can we expect children to master any craft if we do not first give them the opportunity to master their thinking?
I don't believe the answer is to reject technology, nor do I believe algorithms are the enemy. They are tools, and like all powerful tools, they require understanding. The challenge is making sure children grow up with enough awareness, confidence and critical thought to use these technologies intentionally rather than simply responding to them automatically. That feels less like a technology problem and more like an educational responsibility.
The future will undoubtedly demand new technical skills, but I suspect the greatest advantage young people can develop will not be learning to compete with algorithms. It will be learning to think alongside them without surrendering their own judgement. That is a very different goal, and one I believe deserves far more attention than it currently receives.
